Increments Studio on Crafting Calm, Light, and Spatial Poetry in Ningbo Residence
Project Spotlight: Ningbo Residence
(Design: Increments Studio, Photography: Interspace Studio)
With Ningbo Residence, Increments Studio explores how architectural form can become an emotional experience. Founded by Naomi Ng and Liang Hu, the Shanghai-based studio approaches interior design as an extension of architecture, where light, form, and texture create a quiet dialogue. Drawing from East Asian philosophies and modernist principles, their work transforms everyday spaces into immersive journeys that evoke reflection and calm.
Interview with Increments Studio
1. Can you share the story of how you entered interior design, and how your background shaped your creative practice?
2. What was the brief for your winning project, and how did it inspire your approach?
We often find that conversations about interiors focus on styling or decoration. Our approach sees interiors as an extension of architecture, spaces shaped by walls, floors, and light as much as by objects.
This project explores how texture can emerge through form. Instead of relying on material finishes, we sculpted curves and gradients to create a soft interplay of light and shadow. These shifts guide movement and evoke a sense of intrigue throughout the apartment.
3. What design choices or innovations in this project are you most proud of, and what challenges did you face while bringing them to life?
We’re most proud of how the interior was shaped through the articulation of form and detail. Each space was customized and sculptural. That made fabrication and integration with everyday functions challenging, but possible thanks to the builder’s incredible craftsmanship and precision. The result feels both refined and deeply personal.4. Who are the interior designers or creative figures who inspire you most, and why?
Our work draws from the modernist ethos and the artisanal spirit of the Arts and Crafts movement. Both celebrate materiality, craftsmanship, and spatial poetry. For this project, Carlo Scarpa was a key inspiration. His relentless attention to detail and ability to merge craft with architecture deeply resonate with our approach.
5. How would you describe your design philosophy and the principles that guide your decisions?
Our philosophy centers on slow living, creating spaces that foster presence, tranquility, and warmth. We value softness, lightness, and the journey over convenience. Each project is about crafting an experience that encourages people to pause, observe, and feel grounded in their surroundings.
6. How do you balance timeless design with contemporary trends, and how do you approach sustainability in your work?
We don’t design around trends. We believe trends are labels that emerge after a period of cultural reflection, not starting points. We design from a maker’s point of view, focusing on how people move, touch, and inhabit space. That human-centered approach naturally leads to timelessness.
Sustainability, for us, comes from designing spaces that endure emotionally, functionally, and physically.
7. How do you balance your client’s needs with your own creative voice?
We’ve been fortunate to work with clients who trust our vision. Differences often come down to preferences in materials or finishes, but through open dialogue and mutual learning, we find solutions everyone feels connected to. Collaboration is part of the design process, it keeps the work grounded and richer.8. What does receiving an INT Interior Design Award mean to you personally and professionally?
This is our first interior award, so it means a lot. As a young practice, this recognition encourages us to keep challenging conventions, embracing both our strengths and our uncertainties. It’s a reminder that creative risks are worth taking, that although there are always going to be hurdles, there are also people who see value in that pursuit.9. What advice would you give to emerging designers, or what excites you most about the future of interior design?
As emerging designers ourselves, we’ve learned that patience and intent are key. Keep questioning how people inhabit space and let that guide your creativity, to think beyond aesthetics.
The future of interiors is exciting because technology and craftsmanship are converging, giving designers new ways to express emotion, texture, and atmosphere while staying deeply human in approach.
