1. How did Seehow Design come into being, and how has your background influenced your creative direction?

HE: We grew up surrounded by art and design, and developed a keen eye for aesthetics and a deep appreciation for how spaces can influence emotions. This upbringing fueled our passion for creating harmonious and functional interiors that resonate with people on a personal level. Over time, as we explored the world of design, we drew inspiration from our cultural heritage and experiences, infusing our work with a unique blend of creativity and storytelling that still defines our approach today.

2. Can you tell us about the brief for Ricoh HK and how it guided your design approach?

HE: Seehow Design is shaping the future of Ricoh HK by blending innovation with nature-inspired design. We utilized intelligent technology systems like advanced audiovisual equipment and integrated digital solutions to enhance productivity and promote seamless collaboration. At the same time, biophilic design elements—such as houseplants and organic materials—were incorporated to instill a sense of tranquility and a connection with nature.

In parallel, we introduced comfort-oriented furniture and adaptable dynamic workstations, emphasizing sustainability to minimize environmental impact. Our aim was to create a coworking space that not only inspires productivity and innovation but also nurtures the well-being of its users and respects our planet.

3. What challenges did you face bringing your vision to life, and how did you overcome them?

HE: Sustainability was a key focus, and we integrated energy-efficient lighting systems, low-emission materials, and a comprehensive recycling program. These features aren’t just add-ons; they are integral to the design, demonstrating our commitment to creating a workspace that respects the planet while enriching the human experience.

However, we had a very tight construction timeline, completing the project in about three months. Additionally, since Ricoh HK is a Japanese technology company based in Hong Kong, the design had to seamlessly integrate their innovative products—like advanced audiovisual equipment and digital solutions—within the space to enhance collaboration. Balancing these requirements with our sustainability goals required close coordination and efficient execution.

4. What originally sparked your passion for interior design, and how has your creative journey evolved over time?

HE: Our passion was ignited by a fascination with how spaces can profoundly impact emotions and behaviors. Over the years, our creative journey has evolved through exploration, learning from diverse influences, and a determination to push boundaries. We strive to design spaces that not only inspire visually but also elevate the lives of the people who use them.

5. How would you describe Seehow Design’s philosophy, and what principles most guide your creative decisions?

HE: Seehow Design redefines the essence of ‘excellence’ in design spaces. Our philosophy extends beyond mere functionality and aesthetics; it revolves around crafting experiences that deeply connect with the human spirit and convey messages of excellence.

Sustainability is at the core of our approach. By incorporating eco-friendly practices and materials, we prioritize the health and well-being of our clients. Our aim is to contribute to a healthier life for everyone by designing spaces that uphold environmental responsibility.

6. Is there a particular project that holds special significance for you?

HE: The Tai Po Road House is one of our proudest projects this year. We used dynamic curving forms inspired by nature, luxurious materials like etched glass and polished metals, and introduced eco-friendly systems to manage climate control and air quality. From subtle hints of luxury to an enthusiastic feel at ground level, every detail was carefully chosen to enhance comfort and reflect a sustainable, innovative approach to design. This combination of functionality and eco-consciousness is what makes the project stand out for us.

7. How do you stay at the forefront of emerging design trends and technology?

HE: Beyond our own projects, we aim to contribute to the broader development of the industry. This includes advocating for environmental and healthy design, promoting education and professionalization, promoting diversity within the industry’s ecosystem, and encouraging social responsibility. We also integrate smart technology solutions into our designs, ensuring we remain up to date with industry advancements.

8. In what ways have you continued to grow as a designer, especially in a market as dynamic as Hong Kong?

HE: The interior design industry in Hong Kong is undergoing a significant transformation—from hand-drawn sketches to digital design, and now incorporating AI and VR technologies. As designers, it’s crucial to maintain an open mindset, keep learning, and stay ahead of the curve. By embracing these changes, we can create better spaces for our clients and adapt to the evolving market demands.

9. How do you balance client requirements with your signature style, and how has this approach evolved?

HE: Our design approach is profoundly human-centric. We aim to redefine superior environments by creating spaces that enhance well-being and inspire joy. To achieve this, we integrate advanced technologies and use a significant amount of sustainable materials, setting new standards in environmental responsibility and technological mastery. While we have our design perspective, we always tailor solutions to our clients’ unique needs, striking a balance between functionality and innovation.

10. How does it feel to be honored with an INT Interior Design Award?

HE: We are truly honored and thankful to be one of the winners at the INT Interior Design Awards 2024. This award highlights the significant impact designers have in building stronger communities around the globe. We feel incredibly humbled to have our studio acknowledged alongside such prestigious firms, and we hope to continue bringing positive impacts to the industry while working collectively to drive its advancement.
