The redesign of the iconic “Hanikian” hotel embodies elements of topography of its legendary location on the Corinthian Gulf, endowing the formerly rectangular building into an organic form and shaping a new architectural identity. As the hotel stands on the edge of the Volcanic Arc, besides craterless volcano “Sousaki”, its design was inspired by a mythological embodiment of a volcanic eruption emulating the fluidity of lava: Square volumes become a stack of white “pebbles” while successive curved surfaces on the facades give a dynamic form and sculpture effect, creating a sense of movement.
